A delightful Lady who is also one of my protégé breeders, Pat, is following the how we bred our dogs and has bought our breeding stock has a litter on the way from her beautiful Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, “Lady” and “Buddy” a gorgeous toy poodle with a personality to match his good looks.  

Lady is out of our Gabby a fantastic Mum and she not only inherited her good health but also her temperament and mothering skills.  She just puts her all into her babies so that she has very healthy babies and happy puppies are always healthy babies never the sickly ones so health is so important.  Over the years we sorted out their genetics to see no inbreeding crept in to ensure that every possible precaution was taken to minimise the chances of genetically inherited diseases being passed on and selectively only kept the those with the best temperament and health to breed with.

One of the first things we were absolutely insistent on is that the girls get a full year to recuperate and build up the mineral levels and her immune also get in them in perfect shape as if she doesn’t have it in her when she falls pregnant she can’t give it to her babies.

Pat like us is very attached to her two dogs Lady and Buddy so she also wants to have her dogs around and healthy with minimum vet costs so she can enjoy her girls for every day of their lives.

This will only be Lady’s second litter and Buddy sired them both.  In the last litter Lady had four beautiful girls and one spectacular little boy. These puppies went to all parts of Australia  one going to Qld, one to Vic, one to SA, and one stayed in NSW. The remaining girl was exported to Dubai.  Rosy is now a cherished pet living in the lap of luxury in Dubai, she goes to the groomers and even gets her nails polished.

Lady's next litter of puppies are due around 19^th June 2014.

The following are emailed photos from the folk in Dubai of their Rosy with the family and photo's of her siblings when they were little.  Rosy is almost 12 months old so you can get an idea of size and what they look like as they mature.  As an aside it costs them the world to import overseas animals and they found this blog and couldn’t find anyone else that bred Cavoodles and goes to the degree of trouble we went to, to get the same quality and conformity between siblings we see that there is no inbreeding and by the time we had to keep her here till she was 4 months old and the inoculations she had to have way over what they need when staying here then the Transportation cost etc she cost them over $4,000 and they reckon that on a world comparison they got very good value.  The way she settled in to their lifestyle and family culture also how she interacts with the family and guards their new baby she is truly now one of their family.

The process is that if you are interested Pat requires a $100 deposit and will only take 5 deposits and the picking rights are in the order of the deposits hitting her bank a/c, first in gets first pick and so on. The deposit comes off the purchase price and guarantees your spot on the selection order.

Through our long term selective breeding these dogs don't have a mean bone in their bodies and here we see Rosy has been introduced to their very new baby and instead of being jealous of her she is here protecting her.

One of the traits we tried to breed into them all is that they pick up and blend into the culture of the family but quite by accident because I don't have a clue how it came to be it is working better than we could have drempt and it seems that the results like this is a combination of the mix of the blend of the genetics of the of imported toy Poodles and Gabby's nature and the end result is better than either of the parents plus the time spent handling them very young.

Cattle breeders know that if you get the young calves as soon as they are born and fondle them all over thoroughly the calf is desensitised of its fears toward humans and if it is carried on they can bond with humans as their mother.  This has its drawbacks with cattle but by letting pups bond well with their mum then fondling them as above and spending really quality time with them from a very early age we can also bond them with the human race and we always had our pups and all the breeders getting excited when we came round to them as they were expecting something good to be on and we tried to not disappoint them so when you get them home and have them on their own if you do as we tell you they will not only bond almost instantly with you and your family and give you an enormous reward indeed.

Once the Puppies are born we share the breeding and nurturing process and progress along the way and it is so popular with everyone particularly the children as they see that these puppies are real living beings just like them and they have a Mum and Dad and mum feeds them just like their mum fed them.  In short it builds a relationship between the new family and the new pup right up front and the objective is to make the whole process as enjoyable as possible and welcome your new Puppy into your home as a new member to your family and she/he will enrich the whole family giving back 10 times the love and attention you give out, most rewarding.

Meet a much loved young lady Lisa with more love to give to a young family and superb health a girl who’s family, particularly her mum, dad and sisters contributed so much in building strong genetics into our breeding program and why when I recently retired I had the choice of all my dogs for my pets and Lisa is the one I chose for us as one of our personal pets.  A large part of our reasoning is that once a girl has a litter and becomes a mum herself she becomes a different and better dog as all her natural mothering, love, female, caring  instincts have been awakened in having the litter.

She is a young healthy girl with so much love, she just oozes love for human contact and companionship so she was always one of the girls I would be keeping but as we travel there are motels that are animal friendly and two are fine but 3 dogs are just too many and they aren’t as keen to have 3 in the same room so we are looking for a young family that will give Lisa a fulfilling life and plenty of love.

A happy dog with great temperament and patience for kids is usually not a sickly dog but one in great health and therefore one that costs the least at the vets over the years.

After breeding so long and putting so much into developing our genetics it has been hard to completely remove the beautiful people and friendships we have formed over the years from my future not to mention the connection with these gorgeous animals and there was just that little feeling that I may just return to breeding again so wanted to have the option to have the right genetics to return later on if I got the urge but my lovely wife reminds me that now is later on for us so it is time to face reality of age and part with the lynch pin of future breeding so I have come to that stage of accepting reality and looking for the right family or breeder to release this very special girl into.  She is ready to breed now and Lisa is a whole dog very fertile and had her first litter of 5 puppies 12 months ago and could come into season any time now.

Because she is a whole girl I kept back as the perfect girl to restart breeding with but having now really retired we have decided that at our age we will not ever be restarting breeding again and My darling wants me to only keep one breed so I can’t start breeding Cavoodles again.  This opens an opportunity for a family at the right age for the children to experience the whole process of the birds and bees and to make a profitable investment of finishing up with a very cheap puppy dog, fully toilet trained and absolutely supurb temperament. 

The chances of Lisa carrying genetic problems are so low as her father and mother’s family has a very broad genetics diversity through out theirs lineal family.  Firstly Her mum’s family was imported from Holland and was mated with an Australian Champion and in all she brought 10 champions, Grand Champions into the linage.  Her father’s Grand Father was imported from USA and he brings 7 Champions and double Champions into the genetics of this family of champions.  Bottom line is that the diversity of country of origin means that as each country has a different gene pools for the same breeds so the imported genes combination from USA Holland and Australia improves a stronger immunes systems and stability of personality and they will bring these qualities into their pups.

In addition you would be getting a best quality pet and it is most profitable.  As our last litter brought in $2,000 per pup and the expenses are roughly covered by half a pup so a litter of 5 should return about $8,000 profit yet a litter of 6 should produce closer to $9,000 profit.  Their first litter is usually small and she had 5 and we would normally count on 5 or 6 in future litters

She has only had 1 litter and she was a fantastic mother to five lovely puppies just like her mum with an enormous milk supply.  The first litter is most always one of the smallest so I wouldn't be surprised foe her next to be 5 or 6.

Whilst she doesn't look like a Poodle it is because we have allowed her fur to grow naturally and have that natural look.

Choosing Your Puppy Correctly!

 This is a very important period when we make decisions that will affect us for a long time ahead and in order to do my best to get things right for you guys I spent half a day with Pat in order to download her understanding of each puppy, for Julia and I to observe them ourselves and make our recommendations as to which puppy best suits each person based on the family information you give us.

The first thing that I was impressed with was how similar the genetics in these puppies are (to what we have been breeding in the past) genetic qualities which allow only those qualities which enhance our puppies and because Pat has our genetics i.e. she bought both her cavalier and her toy poodle from our breeding stock and over the years I had gone to great pains to source and breeding dogs with the cleanest (genetically) Toy Poodle sire available we could find.  We even waited and were looking for 5 years to find the things we have been looking for in making our selection of dogs we brought in (to extend or enhance our gene pool was very simply 1) To trace back at least five generations to see there was no discernible in breeding as so often happens with show dogs.   2) Health of the parents and where possible grandparents and past generations.  It was also key to establish and prove with written evidence from the books that they only ever bred once a year because so many breeders say they do but in fact breed twice a year's and this really leeches the nutrients out of the mother, and as a result, she doesn't have them to put into her puppies.  3)  Temperament was the third important area to get right and our toy poodle sire produced that.

We were most fortunate to find a lady who had gone to extreme lengths to buy two imported animals (both male and female) whose grandparents had been imported from different countries by different breeders (worth in the order of $10,000 each) so bringing slightly different genes from different countries creating an expanded gene pool then mated with Australian champions to further expand the gene pool.  This is important because the greater the genetic diversity the greater the opportunity for a stronger immune system, also where the opposite occurs through inbreeding and reducing genetic diversity the weaker the immune and the greater chance of the puppy carrying genetic diseases and costing much more money over the dog's lifetime at the vets.

Finally when we mate a male and female from two different pure bred animals we achieve what in cattle breeding we call a genetic explosion.  The senior health officer from the RSPCA in the UK is on the record of saying that the first generation of this crossbreeding has a 20 fold less chance of carrying genetic diseases than a pure bred and as you can see from above there has been an number of smaller genetic explosions each time the pure bred animal was brought from one national gene pool and mated with the opposite sex from another national  gene pool a similar but less genetic expansion takes place.

This is a major contributing factor why our litters are so even and uniform and it is striking just how uniform  these puppies are.  One could almost shut their eyes and take a pick and have a puppy just as good at spending all day to choose one.  That said as four of the five puppies are going to people interstate who are relying on us to help them choose the optimum puppy for them I have taken Pat's observations over the past six weeks and my own knowledge in order to fine tune the selection for you.

You will notice that within the photos of each puppy there are substantial colour variations due to the available lighting and the angle Julia was standing relative to the direction of the sunlight.   I will note under the photographs which is the closest to their natural colour.  It is also interesting  to note that the camera picks up these variations where our eyes tend to adjust to the lighting.

It must also be understood that in the next two weeks these puppies will roughly  double in weight and the potential for substantial variation in colours over that period but in order to get the paperwork done and registrations etc we can't wait for the last moment particularly with all bar one having to be flown interstate or overseas.

 We developed a method creating an expectation in puppy of a good experience with every human  without bonding to us so that when the new owner first receives the puppy they should be a very strong and quick bonding process bonding to the new family.

 I will be phoning you just before delivery date and sharing some ideas which have proved successful making puppies introduction to your family even more and enjoyable for everyone particularly puppy.

   To personalise the process Pat has given each of the pups a name to identify with instead of a number and this little girl she called Sapphy, from memory one of her grandchildren's nicknames.  Sapphy is our recommendation for Kylie in Adelaide because her temperament will match Kylie's to be a company dog on Kylie's not so good day.   One other characteristic that is very prominent in these generics is a capacity to blend in with the families culture to be able to go for a run with the kids but be just as happy sitting on the couch on pop or grandmas knee

 In this photo Julia has turned about 15° and if you notice the change in colour not only of Sapphy but also Julia's top that's how sensitive cameras are to light changes

 Above) This photo was taken so you can see the waves starting to formed in her fur and by about 10 to 13 weeks it should be lovely and wavy unlike the poodles which are usually curls.  You can choose to let the fur stay long and a lighter colour or clip it back which tends to allow the redness to come through more strongly.

 This is the last photo of Sapphy and is included because it shows facial characteristics that are typical with our breeding in particular many puppies show that framing of the eyes like an owl eyes are framed it also shows those little hairs that protrude out from the reach of the nose and interrupt their vision.  They are easily removed simply taking a small pair of scissors and cutting them off giving them much clearer vision.   Having explained the temperamental and family requirements of active young children and husband and a wife and mother's debilitation needing a special companion dog happy to lie alongside her on her bad days just caring, loving and being a companion requires a very special animal and Sapphy would appeal to us as the best choice to meet the requirements of Kylie and her family in Adelaide.

Now it is Time to Meet Jorja

In looking to advise Ron which puppy best meets his needs for companionship at his stage in life and  Ron I'm convinced that Jorja (pronounced as Georgia) is the girl for you and as you'll be calling her Ruby she also has a good chance of darkening as she  matures particularly if you decide to clip her.   From here on Pat will be calling her Ruby so she starts to get used to her name.

 Here again are two photographs where Julia has turned slightly  toward the light source and a vast change in colour has occurred. Notice Rubies colour is lighter as is Juliu's top. You can also see the framing around her eyes and in the photo below you can see she has a cute little white beard and the intensity of her focus into Julia's eyes.

 Ruby as with all the other puppies presented here will be just as happy sitting on the couch, head on her Masters lap watching television as she will be the moment he picks up the lead to go for a walk. This is common to all these animals

Now Meet Number 3 Puppy Belle

or Pat's #3 Girl

  Belle is my recommendation for Vickie in Dubai primarily because she has all the normal attributes we expect with our Cavoodles plus she was the largest and best equipped to handle the 17 hour flight to Dubai.

In addition to all the normal attributes Belle is a lighter colour and if she is kept short clipped it should be better for her to handle the heat of Dubai especially with her lighter colour.

 

 As you can see she has a  cute face with lovely clear eyes and when she looks into yours I'm sure you will melt.  She too has that framing around her eyes and whilst I would clip her close possibly with a half inch or 13 mm comb on Clippers over her body and legs I'd be very careful how her face is clipped so as to preserve those intriguing streaks that make her one-of-a-kind.

  In the above two photographs we can say that she does have that red tinge in certain lights but it appears to be mainly on the tips of her fur and below you can see that underneath she is a lighter colour which prompted me to suggest that she be tightly clipped to help keep her cool in Dubai's summer.

 In this photo you can see that light colour underneath but also the streaks which will be interesting to see just how she does mature as we can see the waves starting to show.

 Now Meet Brandi

 Jenny and David I am sure little Brandi as Pat has called her and if you let us know the name you will be calling her Pat can start getting her used to that name now and once again you can see that slight reddish tinge on the ends of her fur showing through in various lights and will share your home unit with both yourselves, your two adult children and older cat making her a very much inside dog that will no doubt spend some time on the beach it would be good for her to be clipped with what we call a sheep clip which basically is a half inch comb on the clippers to get a very even cut all over.  Again it would be good to be careful around the face to preserve that framing around her eyes but again important on all of these pets is that hair that protrudes in front of the eyes be taken out regularly. It usually is of no real consequence but because it's close to the eyes it could irritate them and this is even more important if she is to spend time on the beach running in and out of the water.

  Here again you can see that little bit of fur I've mentioned above that they nearly all seem to have and even between clips is good to take that out as soon as it starts to interfere with their line of vision. Again you can see the interesting colourings or streaking on her face and while I was suggesting that whoever clips her should pay particular attention to preserving those streaks and her individuality.

 Just a little tip for everybody, whilst we've never had anyone report shedding we present our dogs as a low shedding animal as we do not believe there is a no shedding dog even humans with long hair will notice strands dropping off and in the shower grate when they wash their hair, so it is only natural to expect every dog will shed some here even though it's never enough to report.   That said by having there hair cut at the end of winter and the end of summer you can virtually eliminate any shedding that might just happen.

Finally Here is Beau

 As shared above the similarities between all these pups what's left to say about beau?   It may have become obvious that they really are a very even in fact reliable breeding combination that we have finished up with that produce very even litters having weeded breeding pairs that don't have what I call that magical X factor which basically means that we can rely on them to produce consistent, reliable healthy puppies with an even temperament.  Puppies that will fit in and blend to the culture of the permanent family and puppies that most people will readily accept as a new member of the family and Beau is no different  He is still an individual with individual personality and appearance.

  I might say that before we got to Pat's place the puppies had been seriously playing with strenuous exercise and this one had gone off through the doggy door to the kennel and was sound asleep and had to be awakened for these photographs and wasn't very enthusiastic about being disturbed.

  Two things I like to point out about the two above photos and that is firstly that reddish tinge on the ends of the fur is evident but only in certain light angles the one below where the look is anything but happy wanting to be asleep that is from a totally different angle which shows up the brown instead of the red tinge.  Secondly where all the others have waves the fur on little Beau is relatively straight as can be seen in the three photos with the red tinge, but whether that remains straight or goes wavy with maturity nobody can tell.  Of special note is a very faint white spot in the middle of forehead which is what King Charles tried to breed into the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and called it his love spot, quite often they are very distinct and about the size of a $.10 coin with cleanly defined edges.

 One of the most vital factors necessary to gain optimum health maximum strength of immune system is to optimise the generic the diversity available to the puppies.  This is done by having two pure bred mother  and father from different breeds, what this does is expands the generics within the puppy because then he/she gets in this case one gene from his mother (a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) and one gene from his father (a toy poodle) in each pair of genes giving him/her twice the genetic diversity of either a straight Pedigree Cavalier King Charles Spaniel  or Pedigree Toy Poodle as they would have each pair from the same breed.  The end result of this cross breeding programme is that the greater the  diversity of genes the stronger the immune, the healthier the dog, the less sickness and because a sick person or dog is not usually a happy person in this case the healthier the dog the greater the chance of a good temperament results.   To further enhance this way then only select the best animals to breed with.

When breeders advertise a second third or fourth generation Cavoodle what has in fact happened is that because Cavoodles as a breed are a new breed they have a very small gene pool so by necessity each generation is reducing the genetic diversity of each generation   I have heard the senior health officer for the British RSPCA "state that a first cross has 20 times  less chance of carrying forward a genetic disease (like heart eyes cancer arthritis etc) than a Purebred mating" so one could assume that geneticly transmitted diseases should become more prevalent in progressive generations.

Cavoodles at 4 weeks old, Eyes and Ears Open and Learning Doggy Social Skills

Well now you can see how well these really little puppies are truly starting to take shape.

They are now four weeks old the eyes are open the ears are open and they are both seeing and hearing so they can now develop relationships with each other.  This is a really interesting time in their growth cycle when they start to develop their individual personalities and learning their social skills within the litter.  When you look at mum in the first photograph you can see their relative size to her and whilst she is only small she is now fleeing more than two of her and the demand is more like three or four times her own demand due to their growth rates and by next week I suspect she will be weaning them and in anticipation Pat has already started supplementing their feed with Farax.  Yes that is right, Farax exactly the same as we feed our babies starting off with 1 teaspoon between the whole litter and gradually building up.

During the next week's is a crucial period where much time has got to be spent with the puppies bonding them to the humankind.  Whilst there are five of them plus mum plus dad making seven there is too many for one-on-one bonding but it is such an important period for the lifelong attitudes and temperament that had been instilled into their parents and Pat will be making sure that every contact with her and her close helpers will be a good experience and they will think all humans are great to be around and giving them love and kindness.

In the overall plan it is quite important that they do not bond with the breeder because then they would have to break that bonding in order to bond with it the new owners and by doing this when they are taken into the new for ever family and they are just the one without the competition from the other siblings they bond very tightly because the new family becomes their litter and the family and their mother and father as well.  This is one of the unique features that we had developed in our breeding stock that gets passed down to the offsprings and why they are such beautiful inside companion dogs.

As this week progresses they will gradually start to get into Farax and a little ground up puppy chow mixed in with the Farax and a very special milk replacement that is low in lactose.  Once these puppies go home they should never be fed milk again and that includes all milk products like cheese etc because dogs are usually lactose intolerant.

 Here we can see them really enjoying the outdoors being in the sun, slightly shaded gaining their first experience on grass stimulating their curiosity to explore and learn new textures and some of them are already in the process and going to sleep as exploring is a very tiring business.   they are also soaking up the natural  vitamin D3 from the sun

Here you can see Buddy the father checking out his handiwork.  Very often the mother's will be so protective poor old dad doesn't even get a look in but gets hundred away however Buddy and Lady are such beautiful even temperaments that he is now allowed to help looking after them.

This last all dark puppy's was only taken a week ago and was taken inside without a flash so you can see the difference that lighting makes and I would say that the colouring in the shade on the grass is closer to the real colouring however the white spots are not really white sports but that is where the bright shafts of sunlight coming through between the leaves as they are fairly full-single colour. 

Here now is a short extract from one of Pat's eMails to me so you can get a better handle on the litter from Pat's perspectives.

The puppies are starting to try and 'play fight' now, getting their mouths around one another's noses etc, little growls and barks happening. I just watched one little, not so little, girl 'squat' to do a wee! So cute. Lady is so funny when I change the bedding following me to the laundry to check out I am not putting a puppy in the washing machine! and to the rubbish with the newspaper also. She is starting to look for more time with me again, coming in several times a night to jump up on the bed and run all over my head  just to say hello, then jumps back down to come back to puppies, but if I shut the door to keep her in here with them, Buddy has found out he can jump on the door to let her back in! Thanks Buddy, does absolutely nothing to ensure I get a full night's sleep. He just settles and sleeps, typical man.

Well this is the email I just love to write and tell people that their puppy has been born and I have the first photos of them.

As I think I told everybody, if not I meant to that this is young Lady’s first litter so we did not expect many, ideally three.   Lady on the other hand had a different idea and she produced 4 beautiful big female puppies ranging between 220 g and 280 g and one cute little boy who only weighed in at 150 g.  I deliberately held back a few days telling you to make sure the little boy was okay and all looks good now.  Today he was weighing at 206 g and that means there is a puppy for everyone who has paid a deposit.

Pat has made a fantastic job as a midwife feeding him several drops of puppy formula many times a day and several times a night. She even slept close by them to make sure the little boy was okay and got some feeds into him during the night as well.  All you Mum’s will understand just how Mums and Grandmothers just seem to have that instinct to hear every movement their kids make.  

At first he wasn’t sucking and just kept wanting to cuddle into mum and go to sleep (this is when we can easily loose them) but Pat kept feeding him with the eyedropper to ensure his little Tummy was full all the time, his body strength built up and next morning he was sucking on mums first important fluids on his own and battling the big pups for his position.  This often happens when there are bigger pups hog the food available in the womb.  Sadly in most cases this means that the tiny puppy fails to prosper, this is the term when they die soon after birth.

I tell you this because we make it a habit of sharing the breeding experience so that you can use it to help the children understand that these little animals are not like a television set where you go to the store hand them some money bring home say a television set and when there’s a new model or it breaks down, throw the old one out.  To help them understand that these little animals were born just like they were carried by their mum and birthed just the same, have feelings and love.  A good breeder will bond the puppies to the human kind with an expectation that every encounter brings them pleasure during the first 8 weeks with their siblings.  

When they go home with their new owners there is a huge change insomuch as their attention is now focused just on their new human Mum, Dad and children also they have their sole attention without having to fight the other siblings for attention.  This then brings about a closer and tight bonding process and if you take hold of and take advantage of this process then you will be rewarded with the very best companion pup money can buy and the love your family member get back will reward and thrill you for many years to come and teach your family a respect and loving experience you couldn’t have done without such a pet.

Not that many breeders have their litters sold well in advance nor do they share the breeding process with the new owners (it isn’t pleasant when something goes wrong and it can) but we find that this prepares the families for their new arrival and makes the whole adoption a better experience and creates an instant respect by the kids and generally is rather nice. 

The last puppy born was smaller than the rest because the bigger ones had hogged the nutritional supply in the womb causing their extra growth at this little fellow’s expense.  Had Pat not given him the treatment she did with such love and attention to detail he would have either been stunted (the runt of the litter) or more likely died, but because of this he should be one with the nicest and softest personality and a perfect but lighter lap dog when inside yet be full of beans when outside, going for a walk or just letting off steam in the back yard.  On the other hand he could pick up and be similar or larger than the others.  This will depend on his conversion rate of the food he eats but my guess is he will be an ideal lap dog. 

There is a lot in common between animals and humans for example when I was born I was two months premature and tiny but with special care and nursing I grew to be 6 ft. (183 cm or 1.8m) tall and the same applies with our little boy.  Depending on the breeder’s attention to detail then the new owners treatment.  In fact Julia’s favourite was the smallest in the litter by a long way and was picked on by siblings but with Julia’s love and cuddles Alice has grown into a lighter but most adorable, soft little darling and so it is expected with this little bloke.

This is a good sign as it shows they are all satisfied and they do a lot of growing while asleep

Here is little Lady– she is a real sweetie and as you can see her size is on the small  end of the style

 She might only be small but look at that milk bar she has loads of milk just the thing small  babies - One for the memory of all the Mums, if you look closely the top and lower tit is dripping milk so it has come through with a gusher and they are all gaining weight well and reasonably evenly

  And here is the dad,  Buddy is actually a light apricot colour the background colour is  overpowering his light colour -  he has a gorgeous  temperament, Buddy and Lady are best of playmates and jostle for a spot on Pat's Knee
